Free Rakia Making Goes On In Bulgaria - For Now Anyway

Power to the people, power to the rakia making in Bulgaria may it live on forever! It is for sure that any government in Bulgaria would fall at the next election if they decide ban or put tax on home made rakia. The EU have also tried to enforce this but have failed at the first hurdle. Time however will eventually kill the homemade spirit such a shame that this will eventually happen.

Bulgaria's new government has abandoned plans to increase alcohol taxes due to public anger that this would threaten a centuries-old tradition of making wine and rakia brandy at home. The centre-right government of the Gerb party had hoped to raise an extra 60 million levs (R335m) a year for the health and pension systems. But Prime Minister Boiko Borisov back-pedalled on the plan on Sunday following rising discontent among Bulgarians.
