Bulgaria Celebrates European Day

Well this was the first time I had heard of this as Bulagria's celebrations are more for political promotion more than anythign else. The every day Bulagrian really don't care too much about European Day and who can blame them. Since EU entry things have gone from bad to worse for the average Bulgarian, why on earth woudl they want to celebrate that? Bulgarians have far more deserving celebration days here than a non-event day like European Day. Like I said it is a day for politicians to have a high profile and not for the people of Bulgaria.

Bulgaria Salutes Europe Day: Bulgaria Salutes Europe Day

The Representation of the European Commission in Bulgaria is organizing Sunday a series of events to mark Europe Day, the EC press center announced.

This proposal, known as the "Schuman declaration", is considered to be the beginning of the creation of what is now the European Union. The day was adopted as the EU flag day at the Milan European Council summit in 1985.

Today, the 9th of May has become an European symbol (Europe Day) which, along with the flag, the anthem, the motto and the single currency (the euro), identifies the political entity of the European Union. Europe Day is the occasion for activities and festivities that bring Europe closer to its citizens and peoples of the Union closer to one another.

Some of Bulgaria's most popular pop singers and bands will take the stage along with choirs and folk groups.

May 9 coincides with Victory Day, the end of World War II. It is celebrated on 8 May in Western Europe and on May 9 in Russia and many of the former Soviet Union states.
