Funds For Bulgarian Gypsy Children

World Bank

Good to see sometign positive happening to the Gypsy kids, but it is a drop in the ocean with the number that need help. Unfortunately the Gypsy way of life leads most children to be in need and investement in education and cultural reform and respect would best be served for Gypsy children of the future.

Bulgaria is set to receive 40 million euros from the World Bank for projects to help Roma children integrate into society, Labour and Social Policy Minister Totyu Mladenov said.

Mladenov, speaking at a the two-day regional seminar: Social inclusion - the priorities of national and regional policies for social Europe, on Monday, said that half of the money from the project will be invested in social policies, while the remainder would be allocated for the reconstruction and building of creches, Novinite reported.

Municipalities and NGOs that meet World Bank criteria will be eligible to use money from the project. The main target group will be Roma children and children with disabilities that need a “more accessible environment”.

The project will last from 2009 to 2013 and the first results will become clear in 2011, Mladenov said.
