Bulgarian Man Of The Year - Dimitar Berbartov

I must say I am disappointed with this, but Bulgarians love their sportsmen and especially football and on top of this admire expatriates who do well abroad. The combination of this proved too strong for home based Bulgarians. There are in my opinion far better deserving Bulgarians that a guy that is paid a fortune for just kicking a ball around. Many will disagree of course.

Manchester United Bulgarian striker Dimitar Berbatov has been named Man of The Year 2009 in a contest organised by Bulgaria's Darik Radio.

At a December 3 2009 ceremony at Sofia's Modern Theatre, Berbatov was announced as the winner, followed by Interior Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov and Detelin Dalakliev, who won the 2009 world amateur boxing title in the Bantamweight category.

Close to 13 000 people joined in the vote, which lasted for 25 days. Berbatov won 5443 of the votes, while Tvetanov got 4269 votes.

This is the second time that Berbatov has won the contest.

Berbatov attended the ceremony after taking a Manchester United jet, Darik said. After a stay of a few hours, he took the return flight, in possession of the symbol of his victory - a sword on which his name has been engraved.

Bulgaria's Miss Bulgaria Should Be Miss World

Any straight man or lesbian for that matter who knows Bulgaria, knows how beautiful the women are there. In my opinion the most beautiful women in the world are located here, I see them on a daily basis. If Antonia doesn’t win this Miss World Contest then the judges know nothing about true natural beauty. I and many other Bulgarians have high expectations for this stunning example of a Bulgarian woman.

Antonia Petrova, current holder of the Miss Bulgaria beauty title, took part on Sunday in the first rounds of the Miss World competition in Johannesburg, South Africa,
Antonia has also prepared a special dance and attractive costumes, hoping to astonish the jury at the most prestigious beauty contest in the world.
The city of Johannesburg hosts the 2009 Miss World final. The event which takes place on December 12, 2009 will be the second in a row for the city.
120 participants representing their respective countries have already arrived in the city to prepare for the glittering final at Gallagher Convention Centre.
Now in its 59th year, the Miss World contest is the world’s biggest annual television event, with a global television audience of more than a billion viewers.

Bulgarian Prime Minister and President To Donate Their Organs

This is the way to get action here, leading by example. What a good couple of high profile Bulgarian dudes that have volunteered donating their organs. The trouble is what organs have they donated? I just hope it isn’t their brains as we all know that politician brains is no use to anyone.

Bulgaria's Prime Minister, Boyko Borissov and President Georgi Parvanov agreed upon starting a campaign for body organ donation. Both joined round the idea after their talks at the President's Office yesterday.
"We agreed that the topic of organs' transplantation be raised again before the society and hopefully thus more people in need will find help," Borissov said. Parvanov reminded that he was one of the first Bulgarians who gave his consent to be a donor.
Earlier yesterday PM, Boyko Borissov predicted double increase in the number of transplantations in Bulgaria. He inaugurated the renovated clinics for transplantation in the Higher Medical Academy on the day of the academy's 118th anniversary.

Christmas To Be Celebrated In January In Bulgaria?

This would be a great idea and get rid of all the westernised lead up and commercialism related to Christmas on the 25th. I have my doubts. Firstly, would be passed due to commercial thinking in Bulgaria and the church is a business as well don’t’ forget. Secondly would the EU have a say\Brussels and allow it? It would give Bulgaria back a bit of its own individuality and unique cultural identity and that is good for moral, which is needed here right now. On top of that it is another celebration to look forward to, as the old Christmas will still be treated as a holiday anyway. We all know how much Bulgarians like celebration and holidays and another one won’t do any harm. The best of both worlds it seems if it goes through – I and many others here hope it does.

The Bulgarian Orthodox Church may be close to marking this year's Christmas as the last to be celebrated on December 25 in Bulgaria. The Holy Synod will meet in three weeks to decide if a move needs to be made back to the Julian Calendar. If this decision is to be made, Christmas will once again be celebrated on January 7.

The plea to make this choice was filed in late November, a similar argument having been made in 1997 with the agreement of only five bishops at the time. Currently, the Church is set to the Gregorian Calendar, which was put in place in Bulgaria in 1916. The Bulgarian Orthodox Church has celebrated Christmas on December 25 as an official holiday since the fall of communism.

Mafia Still In Command In Bulgaria

The mafia still rule Bulgaria and there isn’t anything anyone can do as they are untouchable. The problem lies with rich people who are subject to this kind of threat from kidnapping and extortion. In the meantime the new government just sit back and see these things happening before their very eyes and their manifesto has been ripped to shreds on fighting this unstoppable organised crime.

Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov was forced to flee his native Bulgaria after crime bosses threatened to kidnap his girlfriend and daughter, it has been reported.
Various reports circulating on the internet go on to claim that United's record signing evacuated his loved ones on a private charter plane provided by his manager Sir Alex Ferguson.
It's claimed that local Bulgarian mafia had contacted Berbatov's mother, Margarita, to tell her the family was in danger unless a protection fee of £50,000 was paid.
The reports claim that Berbatov chose not to go to police after he was informed that officials from Bulgaria's Internal Affairs Ministry were involved in the plot.
Instead he negotiated directly with the mafia bosses and reached an agreement that they would leave girlfriend Elana, and new baby Dea, alone.
It is not the first time that Berbatov has had a run in with the Bulgarian mafia. While he was a youth player for CSKA Sofia, he was kidnapped and delivered to crime boss Georgi Iliev who demanded Berbatov play for his own club FC Levski Kjustendil.
