Bulgaria and Greece’s joint application to host the men's European volleyball championships in 2011 had a strong chance of winning, European Volleyball Confederation (CEV) president André Meyer said in Varna as quoted by Dnevnik daily.
Varna Palace of Culture and Sports director Simeon Varchev said that the sports hall needed reconstruction to meet the new standards. The court would be widened, cutting into the stands, but two additional stands would be built to compensate.
The other candidates to host the event are a joint bid made by Czech Republic and Austria, Denmark, France and the Netherlands. The final decision would be made on September 25 or 26.
Meyer said that it was his last inspection in Varna and he was satisfied with what he had seen. He promised to recommend CEV’s board to approve Bulgaria and Greece’s bid.
